Dental Braces Treatments in Linden, NJ
A healthy smile is a beautiful smile when the teeth are straight and well-aligned. If there is insufficient spacing or too much spacing on the jawbone, the teeth can erupt crooked or there may be gaps between the teeth leading to a bad bite. Orthodontics is the branch of dental medicine which is dedicated to the study of the position of the teeth and jawbone. Orthodontic treatments are concerned with moving teeth and making necessary changes in the supporting bone such that the bite is improved, which is very much essential from an oral health perspective. At our APS Dental Center, we offer comprehensive dental care to cure all dental problems. If you are a resident of Linden or the surrounding communities, make an appointment and meet our dentist for an oral checkup. Our oral care team can create a healthy smile for you.
Malocclusion and Orthodontics
The ultimate aim of orthodontic care is to prevent and cure problems related to the bite. The upper and lower teeth come together in a bite. When the teeth are in irregular positions, there can be problems with the bite. Such conditions are called malocclusion. An orthodontic treatment is essential to move the teeth in the planned directions and improve the bite. The treatment is recommended to avoid the following problems.
- Malocclusion can make it difficult to maintain oral hygiene
- It can make a smile less interesting
- It can reduce chewing efficiency
- It can cause teeth wear
- Malocclusion can affect speech
Dental Braces – What are they and why are they recommended?
Dental braces are wired appliances that are designed to apply pressure on the teeth and move them in the planned direction. The wire is kept in tension mode for this purpose. People undergo this treatment mostly during their teenage years, but the treatment is effective even in adults. Dental braces are recommended in order to prevent long-term oral health problems and improve the efficiency of the bite.
Dental Braces Treatment Process
Our dentist performs a thorough oral check during the first visit of the patient. If signs of malocclusion are noted, X-rays and impressions may need to be taken. An acrylic model of the dentition is created at our office to understand the bite. Our dentist recommends dental braces when the teeth are in irregular positions and there is the necessity for improvement of bite.
Dental braces consist of brackets and wires. First the teeth and gums are cleaned through professional techniques. Tooth decay if found during the course, must be treated before application of braces. Once the dentition is ready for application of braces, our dentist marks the position of brackets. Teeth are dried and adhesives and dental cement are used to bond the brackets over the teeth. The wires are then fitted in the brackets in tension mode. Initially, the patient may feel some discomfort since there is pressure over the teeth. Once the teeth start to move the discomfort reduces. The patient is advised to visit the dental office periodically to check the progress of the treatment and to get the wires tightened. The treatment may take about 18 months or more depending on the case. On completion of the treatment, our dentist recommends the use of retainers to ensure that the teeth remain in the new position and do not fall back.
